Stage 5: I'm gradually working my way down the picture, painting in the sand ripples. I've decided I'm not happy with the pattern and direction of the 'roughed-in' ripples towards the bottom of the picture so have lightly sketched in some lines that will indicate the direction I think the ripples should take. I will re-do these roughly painted ripples before I get much further with the painting.

Stage 4: I've finished roughly painting in the muddy lumps in the middle-distance and have started to add some colour and form to the wet sand just infront of these. It is important at this stage to establish the correct colour values for the wet sand as these colours will be carried through to the rest of the painting to a large extent. Some of the pinky-purple underpainting will show through in places which will help to emphasise the cooler blues and purples that make the sand look wet.
