On the sea ice

At about 84°N on the sea ice, somewhere about half-way between Spitsbergen and Greenland, a polar bear sniffs the air. It is about one o’clock in the morning and the sun, which has never set, casts a low-angled light across the jumbled ice that stretches to the horizon in every direction. This is truly the realm of the polar bear.
