Last bale

Last bale

It's the end of summer and the farmer has brought in all but the last straw bale from this field. The early evening sun streams across the stubble field and a couple of woodpigeons fly up as I approach.

This painting is based on abstract shapes - the contrast between the circular form of the straw bale and the long horizontal rectangles of gold and blue of the stubble field. The drill-lines of the stubble add an additional counterpoint. In contrast to these geometric shapes are the organic forms of the woodpigeons. I loved the complementary blues and golds of the scene and was surprised at the range of colour present in this simple field of stubble.
