Sandpiper

Sandpiper

This painting relies heavily on the bold abstract shapes of the boulders and the fan of water running out over the sand. These isolated boulders were linked by the threads of run-off water that trickled between them, forming small moats around each one before being driven by gravity towards the next one down the chain. After the last small rock had been moated the rivulet almost seemd to lose purpose and fanned out across the sand in its inevitable journey to the sea. I liked the way the flat light from an overcast sky accentuated the abstract quality of the scene.

The pattern and colours of this common sandpiper seemed to compliment the scene well.
