Tyninghame afternoon

Tyninghame afternoon

Tyninghame is a lovely little estuary on the southeast coast of Scotland and it is one of my favourite places. It has a fascinating geology, which I don’t pretend to understand, but what seems to be sandstone has formed wafer-thin layers, much like filo pastry. When the late afternoon sun strikes the edges of these layers, they shine in pink and yellow.

Redshanks are common and very vocal waders on this shore, but they can blend into their surroundings surprisingly easily. Often the first indication that one is present is its image reflected in a rock pool.
