Duckweed
Whilst on an Artists for Nature Foundation (ANF) trip to the East Anglian Fens I sketched this duckweed-covered channel at Woodwalton Fen. I was particularly interested in the patterns of the shadows from the phragmites reeds that fringed the channel. These shadows fell across the duckweed blanket in pastel blues and purples that refelected the colours of the summer sky and offered a surprising colour contrast to the vivid sap green of the sunlit waterweed. At one point in the afternoon a moorhen ventured out briefly from underneath the overhanging reeds, cutting a thin, ragged wake through the duckweed.
