"...I have used the burn as a path, leading you up through the picture, tempting you to sneak under that fallen trunk and to look around the corner to see what’s there. The shadows of trees falling across the picture are a counterpoint to this vertical composition and invite you to glance left and right as you move through the landscape. At least that’s the idea."

"...This was one of those scenes that stir human emotion and that bring a smile to the face of even the most hard-hearted among us. Ducklings, it seems, have that effect on us. This is an unashamedly sentimental picture and I make no apologies for it. It was a scene that moved and delighted me both as an artist and as a human being, and I wanted to share this delight through my painting. However, I was motivated as much by the artistic elements of light, colour and pattern as by sentimentality."
