A cormorant dries its wings on a hot June afternoon at the RSPB’s new Wallasea Island Reserve on the Essex Marshes. A breeze ruffles the water surface as an avocet feeds in the background.

This field painting was painted almost entirely in situ; a few finishing touches added later in the studio.
