Against the light

This painting is the sister work to ‘Redshank’. Both are the same size; the same subject matter; painted at the same place but looking in different directions. In this painting we’re looking into the sun and I was intrigued by the way this completely altered the colours of the landscape. It was also a challenge to convey the feeling of sunlight glaring off wet sand and sparkling off the water – something I had wanted to attempt for some time but had never plucked up the courage to do!

The redshank is the common wildlife element in both paintings – it’s bright orange legs adding a tiny colour accent in to an otherwise fairly muted palette of colour.
