The black-throated diver is arguably the most handsome British breeding-bird.

Not only is it blessed with the most superbly patterned plumage in black, white and grey, but it also exudes aristocratic poise and elegance and to see one is truly a thrill.

They breed on remote Scottish lochs and I sketched this one in the Highlands one early morning in May, as the low sun glanced across the end of the loch picking out the texture of the rocks behind.
