The giant leaves of the butterbur, a native plant found alongside watercourses, have an almost sculptural quality.
This stand, which grows right outside my front door, caught my attention one morning as the brilliant summer sun shone through the leaves in vibrant, acid yellows, contrasting with the cool dark greens of the shadows.
I was attracted by the interlocking abstract patterns of light and shade, and I immediately set about painting. This whitethroat, dwarfed by the scale of the plant, passed through as I painted.
Original painted in acrylics on board.
